ESL PROGRAM
When Houghton Mifflin needed a partner to write and produce 4,528
pages of SEs, TEs, and ancillaries for a four-color, three-level
program, Black Dot Group completed the task in just seven months.
We established a process for correlation to state standards during
manuscript development. Black Dot Group created a workflow to
accommodate one-month development of more than 1,000 pages of
standards-based ancillaries. We worked closely with Quality Assurance
to ensure fact accuracy and standards inclusion and with
Design/Production to achieve gender and ethnic balance in art. The
result was a 100-percent compliant program adopted with little
change.
MAJOR TESTING PROGRAM
In four short months, Black Dot Group teamed up with Harcourt
Assessment to produce the first four-color test product for 13 levels (K-11).
The project exceeded 3,000 pages and included more than 6,000
pieces of art. We worked with the Solutions group to create an
extension for positioning answer bubbles accurately within one
one-hundredth of a point. Black Dot Group developed a workflow for
page and art counts and established an illustrator pool with specific
expertise, establishing the brand through the organic look of the art.
FACT CHECKING
For a K-6 social studies program, Scott Foresman required that all
concrete and interpretational facts be questioned and verified to
ensure that the program met state hurdles for accuracy in the
textbook adoption process. The client had to provide documentation
to show either verification or possible revision for inaccuracies. It
also had to meet a demanding schedule through several proof
stages and provide information that re-checking was implemented for
inaccuracies. Black Dot Group adapted existing in-house procedures
and processes to meet the specific client needs and bound
book dates. The program was approved by the state with no factual
changes required.
CALIFORNIA READING-–TEACHER’S EDITION (2001)
Black Dot Group assisted Houghton Mifflin with the 20,000 page
California Reading–Teacher’s Edition (2001). The project had a
demanding schedule, budget constraints due to modification of the
national program, and a large volume of annotations and ancillaries.
Black Dot Group dedicated a team to this project that crossed
multiple shifts. We developed a project map that included procedures
for all services.
MATH GRADES K-4 PES AND GRADES 1-4 TES
A demanding schedule, large volume of artwork, and budgetary
constraints challenged Black Dot Group to develop solutions for a
complex Houghton Mifflin project. The client required scanning and
image management for math grades K-4 PEs as well as composition
and pre-press for math grades 1-4 TEs. The project included
8,000 page compositions, 6,000 images scanned, 7,000 PE reductions
made, 10,000 CTP files created and 50,000 proofs. Black Dot
Group developed customized project management software and
assembled dedicated teams to assist. Multiple facilities and shifts
were used to meet or improve schedules, and budgets were collaboratively
developed between Houghton Mifflin and Black Dot Group.
We interfaced with multiple development companies and coordinated
scheduling.
LEVELED READERS–GRADES 5 AND 6, SPANISH READING TE,
LECTURA TE, AND CA AND FL READING TES
Black Dot Group proved up to the task when Houghton Mifflin
approached us to produce leveled readers for grades 5 and 6,
Spanish reading TE, lectura TE, and CA and FL reading TEs. We
produced a large number of pages under a demanding schedule
and tight budget. The project required that numerous annotations
and ancillaries be placed. We also interfaced with multiple development
companies and coordinated scheduling. Black Dot Group
dedicated a team to this project across multiple shifts and developed
a project map that included procedures for all services. |
